Recipe: Set up a community app with the setup wizard

The App Setup Wizard builds a complete community app from your BuddyPress or BuddyBoss site. It takes a few minutes, and you finish by seeing the app on your phone in the WPMAM Previewer.

Before you start

  • BuddyPress or BuddyBoss Platform is active on your site.
  • Mobile App Manager (MAM) is installed. The wizard opens the first time you visit Mobile App Manager after installing it.

Step 1: Choose Community app

If your site also runs GeoDirectory, the first step asks what kind of app you are building. Choose Community app (BuddyPress) (it says BuddyBoss when that is your platform). If BuddyPress is your only content plugin, the wizard goes straight to the community path.

Click Install MAM BuddyPress if it is not installed yet. The Next button turns on when it is ready.

Step 2: Choose your community features

Screens in your app. Feed, Groups, Forums and Members are checked to start. Chat appears when MAM Chat Manager is active, and Events appears when The Events Calendar is active (with an install button for MAM The Events Calendar if needed). Home is always the first tab, and Logout is always in the side menu.

Cards on the Home screen. Profile completion, Latest posts, Your groups, People to meet and Followed discussions are checked to start. Upcoming events appears with The Events Calendar.

How do members join? Your app is for members only, so everyone signs in to use it. Choose one:

  • Members join on your website. A companion app for your members. The app opens on the sign-in screen and has no sign-up option.
  • Members can also join in the app. The app opens on the sign-in screen and also offers sign-up, so new members can create an account in the app.

The step also lists who the app is set up for: every WordPress role on your site that has members, plus Administrator. You can sign in with your own admin account to check the app.

Click Next Step to build the app.

Step 3: Colors

Pick your app’s main colors.

Step 4: See it on your phone

Scan the QR codes to install the WPMAM Previewer and load your app. If the codes do not appear, use the email option on the same step.

Step 5: Next steps

Open Mobile App Manager > App Settings to rename tabs, change icons and add more screens. Home card titles and limits are under Mobile App Manager > BuddyPress.

Good to know

  • Running the wizard again adds anything you check that is not in your app yet. It never removes screens or cards you uncheck; remove those in App Settings.
  • An app that is already set up is left alone. If your app was configured before, the wizard shows a notice and makes no changes. Use App Settings instead.
  • Publishing needs the MAM BuddyPress Suite (or another MAM Suite plus the BuddyPress Add-On).
