Show a landing page for app links

What you’ll achieve

App links (check-in QR codes, friend codes, venue codes) open your app when it is installed. On a phone without the app, the same link opens your website, where it means nothing. With this setting on, those links show a short page instead: your app name and icon, App Store and Google Play buttons, and “Already have the app? Open it and scan the code again.”

You’ll need

  • Universal links set up (see Set up iOS universal links and Set up Android App Links).
  • A site icon (Appearance → Customize → Site Identity). It is shown as the app icon.
  • Your App Store app id and Google Play package name once the app is live. Until then, leave them blank: the page shows “The app is not in the stores yet” instead of buttons.

Steps

  1. Go to Local App Setup → Universal Link.
  2. Under App Link Landing Page, check Show Landing Page.
  3. Optional: enter an App Name (blank uses the site title).
  4. Enter the App Store App ID (the number in the app’s App Store link) and the Google Play Package Name when you have them.
  5. Click Save.

What changes

  • Any page address carrying an app link parameter (mam_ci check-in codes, mam_fc friend codes) shows the landing page.
  • The home path is added to the paths your app claims for iOS universal links, because app links point at your home address. This means any link to your home page, including a plain “visit our site” link, opens the app on iPhones that have it installed. The Claimed now line on the settings page shows the full list.
  • Venue links (?mam_v=) are not included, because they already open a venue page on the website. Leave this setting off on a site whose app links have their own web pages.
  • With an App Store App ID, the landing page also carries the Safari Smart App Banner.

For developers

  • mam_universal_link_app_params filters the list of query keys that mark an app link.
  • mam_universal_link_landing_data filters the page content (app name, icon, store links, text).
  • Set up iOS universal links
  • Set up Android App Links
