What it does
The BuddyPress Friends Map content type shows a map of venues where the member’s friends are checked in right now. Each pin is a venue, never a person’s device location. The pin subtitle lists who is there and how long ago, for example Jane, Bob · 12 min ago. Tapping a venue lists those friends.
Add it to the app
- Go to App Settings and add a button.
- Choose the content type BuddyPress Friends Map.
- Title it, for example Friends Map. The default icon is a map.
The screen requires a signed-in member. Signed-out visitors see nothing.
Who appears
A friend is shown only when all of these are true:
- they are a confirmed friend of the viewer,
- they turned sharing on,
- they have not turned on Hide me from friend search & public check-ins (that choice always wins),
- their latest check-in is inside the time window and they have not checked out,
- that check-in happened after they turned sharing on.
Up to 100 rows are sent.
It only works both ways
A member who is not sharing sees a single row explaining that they need to turn sharing on to see their friends, with a Turn on sharing button. Once they share, the top row says they are sharing and offers Stop sharing.
Turning sharing on and off
Members can change it in two places:
- the button at the top of the Friends Map, or
- their User Profile, using the field Share my check-ins with friends on the Friends Map. Map that field on the User Profile form in Mobile App Manager the same way as other added profile fields.
Sharing is off for everyone until they turn it on.
